When you’re on a yacht, especially out on the ocean, the engine room and the helm need to tell the same story. At Firefly Engineering, we developed and tested a custom marine electronics interface to bring existing MTU engine data onto a yacht’s NMEA 2000 network.
The challenge was to make data from an existing engine interface available through NMEA 2000. That meant understanding the data coming from the engines and translating it into a form the receiving equipment could use.
Custom electronics for yacht engine monitoring
Firefly Engineering developed software to read the MTU data and identify the corresponding engine readings. The work also involved examining the information carried over the RS-422 connection and mapping its conversion to NMEA 2000.
That work connected software development with a practical marine electronics requirement: getting information from an existing engine interface onto the displays used on board.
For yacht monitoring upgrades, this kind of custom marine electronics can provide the connection between existing or legacy equipment and the information needed on board.
Based in Fort Lauderdale, Firefly Engineering provides marine electronics design and integration for yachts. Contact Firefly Engineering to discuss MTU engine monitoring, NMEA 2000 integration or a custom marine electronics requirement.
